Amsterdam: Food and drink , restaurants, bars

BOB'S EATS & LIBATIONS
AMSTERDAM

"Hash" bars are for Americans and other assorted tourists from repressed societies.
Don't look for any here. Find them yourself!

Brown bars
Crusty!
Crusty, gritty, dark, brown, smoke-wax-tobbacco stains....
Warm. What every bar should be.

Basic survival vocabulary:
A hang-over = een kater, kick in the head ( a shot of Jenever, Dutch gin, followed by a beer chaser ) = kopstoot; cheers = proost (or, in Frisian, 'boppe')

so
"boppe"

"o Dutch! "

Spuistraat 273-275
020 624 99 98

Typical Dutch fare. Somewhat touristy.

het Zwaantje

Berenstraat 12
20 623 2373

Typical Dutch fare, embarrassingly huge portions. Can easily share. More local/neighborhood than Haesje Claes above.

" never met an interesting man who didn't drink." - Katherine Hepburn

Singel 32
020 623 03 82

The place for breakfast or lunch if you're staying in any of the Centrum canal hotels. Great sandwiches (tostis, broodjes)! Never fails us when at the Estheréa, half a block away.

JUST GO THERE!

Cilubang
INDONESIAN RICE TABLE

Runstraat 10
020 626 97 55

Indonesian quality restaurant with homey atmosphere offering an elaborate Indonesian Rice Table as its speciality. Intimate. Served by owner. Better service not available.

Café de Eland

Prinsengracht 296
020 623 76 54

Back area table service self-service. Look out for those two steps in the middle. Can be a hazzard...after a few.... Friendly, cozy, local, accomodating, young, great for an after-dinner or a late night brew.

Prinsengracht 653
020 625 96 80

Light, quiet lunches. Great for reading. Soups, tostis, broodjies. Outdoor seating by the Prinzengracht in the warmer months. Comfortable. Rotating art exhibits of locals.

Café de HOPPE

Spui 18-20
020 420 44 20
A choice: Hoppe "seated" / Hoppe "standing". Want to sit, enter left. To stand, enter right. Hoppe "standing", crustiest of crusties, darkest of the dark -- atmosphere, decor, clientele. 'Rots' o' 'regurars', mostly artist types, not remiss about sitting at your table and striking up. Shift from "sitting" to "standing" at dark. Standard hardy Amsterdam "pub" fare. Bartenders in white shirts and ties. Outdoor café in summer. Centrally located smack on Spui.

"oung man, it is not better to be drunk than sober; but it is happier."
~ George Bernard Shaw

Spuistraat 247
020 624 18 31
seafood@lucius.nl

New 2003 find! Welcome addition after the unfortunate closing of all-time favorite Lulu. Fine dining. Seafood. Excellent service, beautiful suroundings, marvelous food.

RESERVATIONS A MUST!

Spui 24
020 6206264

Pricier and more upscale. The outside café, looking right at Spui is perfect for people watching. The continental menú, while not quite "Lucius", is very good. Pleasant and professional service.

Café

De Pels
Huidenstraat 25
020 622 90 37
Perfect Sunday morning breakfast / morning snack when most of Amsterdam is sleeping in.

"'ve made it a rule never to drink by daylight and never to refuse a drink after dark."
- H.L. Mencken

Eetcafé De Saloon

Korte
Leidsedwarsstraat 102
020 623 04 66
Delightful lunch spot this little wedge-of-a-place carved out by the Prinsengracht. Wonderful pea soup, Holland's national culinary treasure, so suited to the cold and damp. French onion to match. Salads. Conveniently located near Nieuwe Spiegelstraat, a charming street of galleries, bookstores and anticuarians.

nce, however, Vincent wanted to make a soup. How he mixed it, I don't know;
as he mixed his colours in his pictures,...we couldn't eat it."

- Paul Gauguin
