- STILL LIFES -

"The perceived sense of a moment of stillness in what must surely be a slow hum of movement -
a stem hung from a string cannot be completely still, equally the single fruit, has it just fallen,
parted company from its nurturing lifeline or has it sat there a while - hard to say.

Study of Tomatos on the Vine
1999, Oil on gilded panel

"This is what the picture does to me. It makes me smile, and the reason for this is your exalted tomatoes perceived as an icon. I love the wry humour in this, tomatoes a la Byzantine with a modern, modern twist. Though perhaps this is not what you were doing, though again, given our religious debates perhaps a touch of the icon slipped in subconcsiously!! Balance, its all about balance. The weight of the vine against the delicate, umbilical thread, the balance and weight of the fruit along its slender stem. The perceived sense of a moment of stillness in what must surely be a slow hum of movement - a stem hung from a string cannot be completely still, equally the single fruit, has it just fallen, parted company from its nurturing lifeline or has it sat there a while - hard to say. Indeed is it even sitting or is it still in flight, with no groundline present. I love the ambiguity of this and the structure of the composition - a bit of a Degas view!!

Beautiful. Colour, richness, texture. Love it, but as you know I am a great fan of still life and think is one of the most underrated genres."
